Single-action revolvers
For the new cowboy action shooter
The four-gun starter sheet
A main match under the Single Action Shooting Society rules uses two single-action revolvers, a lever or slide-action rifle in a revolver cartridge and a frontier-pattern shotgun. Here is what each one has to be, from the January 2026 Shooter's Handbook.
- Two revolvers. Pre-1899 single-action pattern or approved replica, .32 to .45 caliber centerfire. Loaded with five, hammer down on the empty chamber. Vaquero · Cattleman
- One rifle. Lever or slide action of the 1860 to 1899 pattern, tubular magazine, exposed hammer, revolver cartridge. No .30-30. 1873 · 1892 · Big Boy
- One shotgun. Side-by-side or single shot of the period, a lever-action shotgun, or the 1897 pump. Shotguns
- Lead ammunition. All-lead bullets, revolvers under 1,000 fps and rifles under 1,400 fps. Same cartridge in both guns.
Categories run from Buckaroo (13 and under) through Wrangler (36), Forty-Niner (49), Senior (60) and Elder Statesman (70), plus Duelist, Gunfighter and black powder styles. Read the starter guide

A store for lever rifles and single actions
Lever Action Gun Shop carries one family of guns: lever-action rifles and single-action revolvers, the cowboy guns. That means Henry Big Boys and side-gate .30-30s, Ruger-built Marlin 336, 1894 and 1895 rifles, Winchester 1873, 1892, 1894 and 1886 rifles and Browning BLRs made by Miroku, Rossi R92 and R95, Uberti, Cimarron, Chiappa and Taylor's replicas, and the revolvers that match them: Ruger Vaquero, Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk and Wrangler, Colt-pattern single actions and the Heritage Rough Rider. We are independent and not affiliated with any of these makers.
Start with the cartridge. Our cartridge guide compares the .30-30, .357, .44, .45-70, .45 Colt and .22, the pairing guide matches a rifle and revolver in one round, and the cowboy action guide sums up the SASS equipment rules. Before you load a traditional single action, read why it carries five.
Every firearm ships to the licensed dealer you name, where you complete Form 4473 and the background check: rifles at 18 and revolvers at 21, plus whatever your state adds, listed in the state-by-state guide and on twenty city pages from Cody to Fort Smith.
